Frequently asked questions
What is the GST/HST rate in Canada for 2026?
Canada has a 5% federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Most provinces add a provincial portion as Harmonized Sales Tax (HST): Ontario 13%, and the Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) 15%. Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the territories have no provincial sales tax, so only 5% GST applies. Quebec applies 5% GST plus a separate 9.975% QST.
How do I reverse HST from a total?
To find the pre-tax amount from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate as a decimal. For 13% HST: pre-tax = total ÷ 1.13. The tax portion is the remainder.
Is GST/HST included in displayed Canadian prices?
In most of Canada, consumer prices are advertised tax-inclusive. Quebec commonly displays pre-tax. This calculator supports both directions.
